Aces and Eights Video Poker Rules
Aces and Eights is a variation of Jacks or Better, which is a form of video poker. Although it can seem confusing with all the different variations and pay tables out there, the rules are primarily the same for each video poker variant.
Ranking Of Poker Hands
All video poker games rely on the fundamental understanding of Texas Hold’Em poker hand rankings such as royal flush, straight flush, etc. If you’re not aware of this hierarchy, take a minute to study and familiarize yourself with which hands pay the most.
The most significant difference between Aces and Eights and Jacks or Better is the payouts for Four of a Kind (aces) and Four of a Kind (eights). Jacks or Better does not have this sort of special payout, as it’s seen as the original video poker game from which others have derived.
1. Royal Flush
10, J, Q, K, and A, all in the same suit.
2. Straight Flush
Any 5-card straight, in the same suit.
3. Four Aces Or Four Eights
Four of the same card (As or 8s).
4. Four Sevens
Four of the same card (7s).
5. Four Of A Kind
Any four cards of the same rank.
6. Full House
Three of a kind and a pair.
7. Flush
Any five cards of the same suit.
8. Straight
Five consecutive cards of any suit.
9. Three Of A Kind
Three of the same card.
10. Two Pairs
11. One Pair
Aces and Eights Dead Man’s Hand
The “Dead Man’s Hand” is generally described as a two-pair poker hand consisting of the black aces and black eights.
It comes from the legend of Wild Bill Hickok. The Old West folk hero and infamous gambler was reportedly shot while holding a black pair of aces and eights.
Aces & Eights Payouts
Unfortunately, different online casinos may use different pay tables for Aces and Eights, just like they do for all forms of video poker. The ideal version of Aces and Eights uses the “full pay table”, much like the 9/6 paytable in Jacks or Better.
The full pay table assumes that the online casino is running a version of Aces and Eights that provides the player with the standard rate of return.
